th-ranked Montclair State posted a 3-0 victory over Stockton University in the NJAC opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
CAMILLE MAIMONE and
KAITLYN STRUSS each collected a goal as the Red Hawks (8-3, 1-0 NJAC) posted their second straight win. Montclair also improved to 14-1 all-time against the Ospreys.
MSU dominated Stockton with a 26-4 advantage in shots, however it wasn't until 24 minutes in when the Red Hawks cashed in off a penalty corner. Butrico inserted the ball to Maimone, who sent a high-arching shot that went over everyone, including the keeper before settling into the back of the cage for the game's first goal. It was the first career goal for Maimone.
Less than four minutes later, MSU extended the lead to 2-0 as Butrico, who returned to action several games ago after missing all of last season, put back a rebound with 7:07 to play before halftime. It was Butrico's first goal since November 2014 when she scored against Rowan in the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament.
Struss made it a three-goal advantage just before halftime with her eight tally of the season. The junior got the ball deep inside the circle before ripping a shot past Stockton keeper Emily Sorochynskyj.
KAITLIN MAGUIRE stopped one shot for her third shutout of the season with Maimone picking up a defensive save.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 5 at William Paterson University beginning at 7:00 pm.
