SCHYLER WHITE each collected 10 kills as Montclair State got back on the winning track with a three-set win over William Paterson on Thursday evening.
Junior
MADISON MAUTE added nine kills for the Red Hawks (18-3, 5-2), who bounced back from their first loss in month with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 win against the Pioneers (12-9, 1-5 NJAC). MSU has now won five straight against its local rival and leads the all-time series, 19-16.
Back and forth in the first set, the teams were knotted up at 20-20 when MSU scored the next three points.
MELISSA TERPSTRA sandwiched a pair of kills around one from Matasker for the 23-20 advantage. William Paterson got a point back however turned it back over to the Red Hawks with a service error making the score 24-21. An attack error by the Pioneers gave MSU the 1-0 lead in the match.
The pendulum kept going into the second with a split of the first 14 points until the Red Hawks took control with six in a row. White served up an ace in the first and consecutive kills from Maute and Terpstra put Montclair up 13-7. The lead grew to 17-8 before William Paterson closed the gap to 19-15 on a block by Christine Griffith and Alyson Toman. A three-point run later pulled the Pioneers within 23-20 however White recorded a kill with Terpstra and
JILLIAN WILSON combining on a block lifting the Red Hawks to a 25-20 victory.
WPU jump out to a 5-2 lead in the third and led 9-6 before MSU reeled off four straight to take a 10-9 lead. A kill from Toman allowed the Pioneers to go up 20-19 before Montclair scored the next three on a kill, ace and attack error making the score 22-20. An error by Montclair made it a one-point differential however Matasker countered with the last of her 10 kills. White would close out the set with her 10
th kills as the Red Hawks took the final set 25-22.
NATALIA MAJKUT finished with seven kills while Terpstra had six for MSU. White completed a double-double with 10 digs with
ASHLEY GRIFFITH getting 31 assists and
KIMBERLY MATLOCK 12. Danielle Oclese led all players with 25 digs.
Montclair State goes right back to work on Friday, October 14 in the Ducks Invitational at Stevens. Montclair will face Haverford and FDU-Florham at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, respectively.
