th-ranked Montclair State blanked No. 20 Rowan, 2-0 at Sprague Field on Saturday.
Katilin Maguire posted her third shutout of the season with help from a solid defensive effort as the Red Hawks won their second straight contest against a ranked opponent. MSU (11-4, 3-1 NJAC), which upended unbeaten Muhlenberg on Wednesday, also snapped a five-game losing streak against the Profs with the victory.
MSU dominated the first half outshooting the Profs, 9-1 however keeper Carly DeMarco was able to fend off four of the shots of goal, including a three-shot barrage 15 minutes into the contest. She appeared to make a fourth as Watson drove in from the left side, but instead was whistled for the penalty stroke with 3:20 left.
Watson took full advantage flipping the stroke into the back of the cage for her third of the season and a 1-0 MSU advantage.
Despite the differential in shots, Rowan remained in striking distance and early in the second half got its best chance with three straight corners five minutes in. Erica Faraone ripped a shot off the third opportunity that was blocks. Maguire then stopped Myranda Christy on the follow-up keeping the Red Hawks in front by a goal.
Montclair State would add to its lead with 17:18 left on a chance that began out near midfield.
KAITLYN STRUSS picked off a clear with the ball eventually finding its way on to Butrico's stick on the left side of the circle. Butrico moved in along the end line, maneuvered around a defender and drew the keeper out before flicking shot inside the far post for her fifth goal of the season.
MSU outshot Rowan 13-5 for the game and also had the advantage in corners, 9-5.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 19 with its third consecutive game against a ranked opponent. The Red Hawks will host No. 17 Kean University at 7:00 pm.
