Montclair, NJ – For the second consecutive Wednesday evening, the Montclair State field hockey team spoiled an unbeaten campaign as the 17
th-ranked Red Hawks handed No. 16 Kean University its first loss of the year with a 3-1 victory at Sprague Field.
DANIELLE BUTRICO,
KAITLYN STRUSS and
AMBER HASLETT each had a goal as the Red Hawks won their third straight contest overall and third in a row against a ranked opponent.
Montclair is now 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC and currently second in the NJAC standings.
Krista LaMaina had a goal and pair of defensive saves for the Cougars, who fell to 14-1 on the year, 3-1 in the NJAC.
Montclair, which upended unbeaten and No. 12 Muhlenberg last Wednesday and No. 20 Rowan on Saturday, nearly got on the board in the early minutes of the game as
ALEXIS AMBROSINO fired a shot that was batted away off the goal line by Katie-Lynne Lussier.
Montclair's
KAITLIN MAGUIRE knocked away a blistering shot from Shauna LaMaina at the 7:57 mark and the Cougars' Erin Smith did the same to
CAMILLE MAIMONE three minutes later. Smith would make another save at the 18:34 mark before MSU was awarded a penalty corner.
MEGAN ROELOFFS ripped a shot that was saved by Smith. The ball bounced out toward the right side. MSU's
KELLY WATSON scooped a pass back to the middle while falling down to Butrico, who tipped the shot past Smith for the 1-0 MSU lead.
Leading by a goal, the Red Hawks added to the lead 4:29 into the second. Haslett shot from the left side toward the middle where the attempt was redirected in by Struss for the goal. It was the 11
th of the year for Struss as MSU went up 2-0.
Kean then took control of the contest and created several opportunities off penalty corners before it finally cashed in with 24:12 left. Off a corner, Krista LaMaina fed the ball up top to Shauna LaMaina, who then passed it right back to her sister on the left doorstep for the latter's 21
st goal pulling the Cougars within 2-1.
Krista LaMaina kept the one-goal margin right there as she made a defensive save moments later. Back the other way came the Cougars with Shauna LaMaina firing a shot that was gloved away by Maguire.
Smith and Maguire would trade saves and the defense units held solid for both teams until the Red Hawks capitalized on a corner with 2:43 to play. Butrico got off a shot that was stopped by Smith. The ball came out to Haslett whose putback attempt was denied by Krista LaMaina on another defensive save. Fortunately for MSU, that rebound came right back to Haslett who deposited the carom into the back of the back giving the Red Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
Maguire made five saves for Montclair State, which outshot the Cougars, 20-11. Smith stopped 12 shots for Kean which took 12 of the 19 penalty corners.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 22 hosting York College of Pennsylvania at Sprague Field. The contest kicks off Homecoming Day at MSU with an 11:00 start.
