EMILY BEENDERS scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of penalty kicks as Montclair State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Buffalo State's Coyer Field on Saturday.
The Red Hawks (15-3-3) finished in a 1-1 tie with host Buffalo State before capturing the shootout, 3-1. Montclair moves to Sunday's second round where it will face Messiah College at 1:00 pm. It is the second consecutive year the two meet in the NCAA Second Round. Last year, the Falcons posted a 3-0 win and it will mark the third time they square off in the NCAAs. MSU and Messiah played to a scoreless draw in 2004 with the Falcons advancing on kicks at MSU Soccer Park.
The Bengals nearly took the lead in the 40
th minute however the goal was waved off due to a foul. Moments later, BSC's Melissa Smith was taken down in the box. Victoria Colotti took the penalty kick that was knocked away by MSU keeper
MOLLY BARROW. But Colotti pounced on the rebound putting the carom into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead minutes before halftime.
The Red Hawks would get the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half. Sophomore
ASHLEY KOESTER sent the ball over to the right side where
TYLER MADISON was able to corral it before ripping a shot from the right win that glanced of the crossbar and into the goal. It was Madison's eight goal of the year.
Neither team found a way to take over the lead which set up the shootout, the second straight for Montclair State, which was ousted in the NJAC Tournament semifinals in its last contest.
This time the kicks broke the right way for MSU.
DANIELLA GRECO starting things off with a successful attempt that was matched by Brenna Knight. The goalkeepers came up big in the next round with saves keeping the shootout at 1-1.
BROOKE BEATTY gave Montclair the lead with her kick and that held as Tianna Hatch's attempt ricocheted for the crossbar.
Beenders was successful making the score 3-1 and Barrow ended it stopping Malyssa Chanthasoto's attempt.
Buffalo State outshot MSU 14-10 and had a 3-1 advantage. Barrow had four saves.
