BRETT MANGAN and
ZACH SCHRECK each scored a pair of goals however fifth-ranked Salisbury University shutdown Montclair State in the second half en route to a 23-7 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Blasé Mantineo won 24-of-33 faceoffs with 10 ground balls for the 20
th-ranked Red Hawks, who lost their season opener for the first time in three years. Carson Kalama scored seven goals for Salisbury which remained unbeaten on the year at 3-0.
MSU started off strong scoring eight seconds into the contest. Mantineo won the faceoff, scooped up the ground balls and found
DON FINN for the goal as Montclair grabbed a 1-0 lead. The Sea Gulls answered a minute later which started a four-goal run capped by Nathan Blondino's second goal with 4:31 left for a 4-1 Salisbury advantage. Mangan ended run with his first goal however Kalama scored with 1:29 to go as the Sea Gulls led 5-2 after one period.
The second period began same as the first with Montclair scoring the first goal on Schreck's unassisted tally 1:15 into the quarter. Salisbury however responded with another run, this one a six-goal spurt in a five-minute span giving the hosts an 11-3 lead with 7:05 remaining.
Montclair State countered with a four-goal run to cut into the lead. Schreck scored on a man-up tally and then fed
COREY CARLSON trim the deficit to 11-5.
BRADY WULSTER tallied 15 seconds after the Carlson goal and Mangan's power-play goal with 2:58 got Montclair State within 11-7.
That would be as close as the Red Hawks would get as Kyle Tucker scored with 11 seconds left before halftime for a 12-7 lead. Kalama opened the second half with the first four goals as Salisbury tallied all 11 goals in the final 30 minutes while holding the MSU to just seven shots.
LUCAS JONES made 12 saves for Montclair, which got five ground balls and two caused turnovers from defenseman

STEVE DANYLUK forced three turnovers along with four ground balls.
The Red Hawks are off until next week when they face another tough task. Montclair will be in Carlisle, PA to face Dickinson College at 2:00 pm.
