BROOKE POWERS hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-9 win over Mount St. Joseph as the Montclair State softball team split a pair of contests at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday.
MSU (4-2) fell to Simpson College later in the day. The Red Hawks will play two more contests on Thursday taking on Bluffton at 9:00 am followed by a 11:15 game with Beloit College.
Montclair jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Mount St. Joseph scoring four times in the second.
ALI WALEK doubled in the first run and
NOEL HODGINS plated two more on a single with Powers getting the final run on a base hit.
After MSJ scored a pair of runs in the top of the third, the Red Hawks answered with three runs in its half.
SAM DICLEMENTI drove in the first run and
LAUREN BOOTH lofted a sacrifice fly before
VICTORIA GEHRING singled home Walek for a 7-2 MSU advantage.
KAYLEE POWERS had an RBI in the fourth and Hodgins scored on a passed ball allowing MSU to widen its lead to 9-3. But the Cougars stormed back in the sixth with four runs and then tied the game in the seventh on a two-run homer. Reliever
SAM KEATING came on to get the three outs giving the Red Hawks a chance to win it in the bottom half.
Gehring and Hodgins opened the inning with consecutive walks. After both moved up on a passed ball,
BROOKE POWERS gave Montclair State the victory with her RBI single.
Powers finished 4-for-5 in the game for MSU, which collected 14 hits in the game. Gehring, Hodgins, Luna and
KAYLEE POWERS each had two hits.
The Red Hawks would get out to an early lead against Simpson with two runs in the first.
BROOKE POWERS, 6-of-9 at the plate on the day, singled home Gehring for a 1-0 MSU lead. Walek later drew a bases-loaded walk.
But Simpson countered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning and the Storm added one more in the second.
LIA STAMILE had a sacrifice fly to account for the final Red Hawk run.
Hodgins was 3-for-4.
