BROOKE POWERS tossed a no-hitter in the opener and freshman
VICTORIA GEHRING had four hits and three RBI on the day as Montclair State stormed past Centenary at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday.
The Red Hawks extended their winning streak to five games with a 12-0 and 10-1 victory. Montclair upped its record to 10-4 on the season.
Powers recorded her first career no-hitter as she struck out three and faced just one batter over the minimum. The righthander allowed two baserunners and retired the final seven she faced raising her record to 4-2.
Montclair exploded for nine runs in the third inning as it sent 10 batters to the plate. Powers had a pair of double and drove in three runs in the outburst. Singles by Gehring and
NOEL HODGINS to open the frame turned into the first two runs as Powers smashed a double to right center.
ALI WALEK walked with the bases loaded for a 3-0 lead and
TINA CIACCIARELLI's RBI single put Montclair up four.
LAUREN BOOTH bounced a single through the right side for another run and an error allowed Walek to score increasing the lead to 6-0. Gehring belted a double scoring Booth and Hodgins plated Gehring with a single before Powers capped the inning with her second double.
Montclair tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Ciacciarelli lofted a sacrifice fly and Booth singled home a run with
AMANDA LOMBARDI picking up the final run as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Gehring went 3-for-3 as the Red Hawks collected 17 hits in the game. All nine starters had a least one hit with seven registering two or more – Hodgins, Powers, Luna, Ciacciarelli, Samantha DiClementi and Booth.
LIA STAMILE gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game with an RBI double. Gabby Kramer tied the score in the third on a ground out however Montclair answered with two run in the third. Walek gave the Red Hawks the lead with triple and Ciacciarelli added a sac fly making the score 3-1.
Montclair State blew the game open in the fourth scoring seven times.
ALANA LUNA tripled home a pair and scored on an error for a 6-1 advantage. Booth had an RBI single and Gehring added two more on a double up the gap in right center. Hodgins singled back through the middle scoring Gehring with the final run.
Booth picked up the win improving to 2-1 as she allowed three hits and run through the first four innings. She struck out two and walked one.
SAM KEATING pitched a scoreless inning to complete the win.
Powers was 3-for-4 with Hodgins, Stamile, Luna and Booth each getting two in a 14-hit attack.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 26 with a home doubleheader against New York University beginning at 1:00 pm.
