VICTORIA GEHRING drove in the game-winning run in the opener and
ALI WALEK had four-RBI and a victory in relief as Montclair State swept New York University at the MSU Softball Stadium on Saturday.
BROOKE POWERS went 5-for-7, homered and drove in three runs as the Red Hawks extended their winning streak to seven with a 11-10 and 10-7 victories over the Violets (9-11).
An early 1-0 lead in the opener turned into a four-deficit in the second as NYU scored five times, including a two-run single by Dakota Damiani. Montclair closed the gap to a run in the third as Powers blasted a two-run homer and Walek singled through the left side making the score 5-4.
Claire Stefanelli's two-run single in the fourth extended the lead to 7-4 however Montclair countered with five run in its half. Gehring made it a one-run contest with a two-run homer and Powers' RBI double knotted the game a 7-7.
LIA STAMILE followed with an RBI single and a run-scoring hit from Walek put Montclair up 9-7. Powers scored on an error in the sixth giving the Red Hawks a three-run lead but the Violets refused to go away.
Val Schwein drove in a run with one out in the seventh to bring NYU within 10-8 before Diana King belted a two-out, two-run homer tying the game at 10-10.
In the bottom of the seventh, Samantha DiClementi reached on an error to open the inning and went to second on a passed ball.
LAUREN BOOTH laid down a bunt single that moved pinch runner
SCHYLER EDWARDS to third. Gehring then bounced a single through the left side for the game-winning run.
Powers picked up the victory as she improved to 5-2. Jacqueline Tremblay suffered the loss in relief.
Gehring, Powers and Stamile had three hits apiece for the Red Hawks while Walek, Booth and
NOEL HODGINS each collected two in MSU's 16-hit attack.
The second game saw NYU grab a 6-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning before Montclair State rallied for five runs in its half of the frame, which was helped along by three NYU errors. Walek plated a pair of runs with a double and an error allowed Stamile to cross the plate bringing MSU within 6-5. Pinch-hitter
ALANA LUNA doubled up the gap scoring two more unearned run as the Red Hawks took the lead 7-6.
Walek, who had come on to pitch in the fifth inning, helped her own cause in the sixth with a two run double.
TINA CIACCIARELLI followed with a single along the right field line as Montclair increased its lead to 10-6. NYU got a run back in the seventh however Walek fanned the final hitter to end the game.
Walek got her first career victory as she recorded the final nine outs. Powers and Walek had multiple-hit games for MSU.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, March 29 as MSU travels to Center Valley, PA to face DeSales University at 3:00 pm.
