BROOKE POWERS blasted a pair of homers, including a grand slam and drove in nine runs on the day as Montclair State ran its winning streak to nine games with a sweep of DeSales University on Tuesday.
The Red Hawks improved to 14-4 overall as it won a wild first game 16-7 before posting a more conventional 8-3 win in the night cap. The 16 runs in the first game extended MSU's streak of double digits runs to five games as it put up 10 or more runs in a contest for the seventh time this year. Montclair State has scored 93 runs (10.3 per game) during its win streak and is hitting .436 over that span.
In the opener the Red Hawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning. Powers drove in a run with a ground out in the first inning with
NOEL HODGINS crossing the plate on a wild pitch for the early two-run advantage. Hodgins came around to score on an error in the third and
ALANA LUNA collected an RBI before Powers smashed a three-run homer to left center in the fourth giving Montclair the seven-run cushion.
But the Bulldogs (2-13) batted back with a run in the fourth and then scored six times in the fifth, tying the game on Adrian Barone's RBI single through the right side.
Montclair regained the lead in the sixth with a nine-run explosion sending 13 batters to the plate. Powers opened the inning with a walk and scored the go-ahead run on an error. Samantha DiClementi followed with an RBI single and a two-run, pinch-hit single from
VICTORIA SOOHOO pushed the lead to 11-7.
LAUREN BOOTH added RBI double before Powers delivered the final four runs on one swing of the bat with a grand slam to right center. It was the third home run of the year for the NJAC Player of the Week and her first multiple home run game of the year .
Powers would earn the win in the circle improving to 6-2 on the year as she struck out three and walked one. She also led the 13-hit MSU attack going 3-for-4. Hodgins,
LIA STAMILE and Booth had two hits apiece for Montclair.
Stamile put Montclair on the board in the first inning of the second game with an RBI single however a run in the bottom of the first and another in the second gave the host Bulldogs as 2-1 lead. Montclair State regained the lead in the fifth. Powers lofted a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Stamile doubled home Hodgs as MSU took a 3-2 lead.

VICTORIA GEHRING tripled in one run with a second scoring on an error increasing the lead to 5-2. Montclair then took advantage of several misuces by DeSales plating the final three runs on a pair of errors and a wild pitch.
Sophomore righthander
SAM KEATING got the victory as she struck out three and walked one while allowed three runs (one earned) and eight hits. Keating is now 5-1 on the year. Gerhring was 3-for-4 at the plate with Hodgins collecting two hits. Powers was 2-for-4 and it hitting .733 with four homers and 24 RBI duing Montclair's nine-game win streak.
Montclair State now turns its attention to New Jersey Athletic Conference play as the Red Hawks host Rowan at the MSU Softball Stadium on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 pm.
