Wayne, NJ - William Paterson University scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 5-4 and then scored four times to open the nightcap for a 7-2 win as the Pioneers swept Montclair State in an NJAC doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Red Hawks had their nine-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 14-6 overall, 0-2 in the conference. MSU hosts Rowan on Thursday, April 7 at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm.
Scoreless into the third inning of the opener, Montclair State put the first runs on the board.
TINA CIACCIARELLI opened the inning with a single back through the middle and moved to third following a sacrifice and wild pitch. WPU would get the second out however
NOEL HODGINS singled scoring Ciacciarelli for the 1-0 Red Hawk lead.
BROOKE POWERS followed with a two-run homer as MSU grabbed a three-run lead.
The Pioneers (16-4, 2-2 NJAC) got a run back in the bottom of the sixth with Montclair restoring the lead to 4-1 when
VICTORIA GEHRING singled down the left field line scoring pinch-runner
SCHYLER EDWARDS.
But the lead would disappear in the bottom of the inning as William Paterson scored four times, including four consecutive hits to end the game. Christine Griffith knocked in the game-winner with an RBI single scoring Katelyn Poretti.
Allison Podmajersky (10-2) got the win allowing four runs (three earned) and eight hits, striking out four and walking one. Powers suffered the loss as she fell to 6-3.
LIA STAMILE had two hits for the Red Hawks.
The Pioneers offense kept it going in the first inning of the second game with four runs, including two coming home on an error. Montclair State cut the lead in half in the third as Stamile singled in one run with
VICTORIA SOOHOO drawing a walk with the bases loaded making the score 4-2.
William Paterson answered that in the fifth with three runs for the final margin.
Gabrielle Castelli (6-2) allowed four hits and two runs in her complete-game effort. She struck out seven and walked five.
SAM KEATING (5-2) took the loss for the Red Hawks.
Powers was 2-for-4 for Montclair.
