Montclair, NJ - Junior Ashley DeYoung belted a pair of home runs while Nicole Paiotti cracked a grand slam and drove in five runs as Rowan University rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Montclair State at the MSU Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Profs posted wins of 16-0 and 13-4 as they improved to 20-6 on the year, 3-1 in the NJAC.
Freshman
LIA STAMILE had a two-run homer for the Red Hawks, who dropped their second straight twinbill. MSU fell to 14-8 on the year, 0-4 in the conference.
Rowan stormed out of the gate scoring seven times in the first inning. Morgan Smith, who had three RBI in the opener, drove the first two with a double and Paiotti added another on a base hit. Another run would come home on the first of six errors by Montclair pushing the lead to 4-0 before Alyssa Sims and Shilah Snead each added RBI singles for the seven-run cushion.
The Profs added two more runs in the second and tacked on six more in the third, including back-to-back homers from DeYoung (two-run shot) and Smith.
Beth Ann Hyland (10-2) retired the first nine batters she faced before allowing an infield single to
VICTORIA GEHRING leading off the fourth. It would be the only hit allowed by Hyland, who struck out six.
BROOKE POWERS (6-4) took the loss for MSU.
Snead, DeYoung and Smith had three hits apiece for Rowan.
The Profs jumped out to another lead in the nightcap plating four runs in the first inning. DeYoung drove in the first with a single and Damriz Mercado added three more with a bases-clearing double. Montclair State would cut that deficit in half in the bottom of the inning on Stamile's second round-tripper of the year.
Rowan answered with three runs in the second inning, including DeYoung's second home run of the day and broke the game open with a six-run third. Paiotti capped that inning with a grand slam to left field for a 13-2 lead. The Red Hawks scored the final two runs of the game as
LAUREN BOOTH drove in a run with a base hit in the third with Gehring lofting a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
MacKenzie Juodaitis (6-2) got the win striking out four and allowing four hits.
SAM KEATING (5-3) took the loss.
Montclair State returns to action on Sunday, April 10 with a home NJAC doubleheader against Stockton University beginning at 1:00 pm. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday however the threatening rain and snow shower mix forecasted for the area forced the doubleheader to be pushed back for a day.
