Softball Sweeps Past Baldwin Wallace, Bridgewater in Florida

Red Hawks Win 5-4 & 9-0 to Move to 3-1

Kissimmee, FL – Freshman VICTORIA GEHRING singled home a run and then scored on an error during a three-run bottom of the sixth inning as Montclair State rallied to beat Baldwin Wallace 5-4 at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday afternoon.

Freshman righthander SAM KEATING tossed a four-hit shutout later in the day as the Red Hawks upped their record to 3-1 with a 9-0 win over Bridgewater College.

Mackenzie Nelsen gave the Yellowjackets (2-1) a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning with a two-run single. Montclair would get those back in its half of the inning. Gehring walked and NOEL HODGINS put down a bunt single to open the inning. LIA STAMILE walked to load the bases before Alan Luna smacked a two-run single tying the game at 2-2.
Baldwin Wallace retook the lead in the second when Lena Kortis doubled home a run and the Yellowjackets tacked on another in the fourth as a walk with the bases loaded made the score 4-2.

MSU's sixth-inning rally came with two outs and was aided by a pair of errors. ALI WALEK drew a walk and LAUREN BOOTH's ball to left field was misplayed putting runners at the corners. Gehring singled down the right field line driving in Walek with a second error allowing Booth and Gehring to come around as Montclair took a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Yellowjackets put runners on first and second with one out however senior right hander BROOKE POWERS got a pair of line outs, including one back to her for the final out.

Powers, the NJAC Pitcher of the Week, improved to 2-0 as she allowed 11 hits, struck out one and walked five.

Keating (1-0) gave Montclair State its second shutout in four games as she picked up her first win of the year striking out two and walking two versus Bridgewater. Hodgins was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Gehring added two hits for MSU which collected 10 in the game.

Montclair scored twice in the first as Gehring doubled and later scored on an error with Hodgins crossing home plate on a passed ball. LIA STAMILE added an RBI on a ground out in the third and Hodgins scored again on a passed ball in the fifth making the score 4-0.

Gehring and Hodgins each drove in runs in the sixth and Montclair closed out the game with three runs in the seventh. KAYLEE POWERS, AMANDA LOMBARDI and ALI WALEK each had an RBI in the inning.

The Red Hawks will now have a day off before returning to action on Wednesday, March 9 with two contests. MSU will face College of Mount St. Joseph at 9:00 am followed by an 11:15 game with Simpson College.
