Grand Slam, Shutout Highlight Softball Sweep of Staten Island

Powers Tosses Two-Hitter on Senior Day

Montclair, NJ - Righthander BROOKE POWERS tossed a two-hit shutout on Senior Day while freshman LIA STAMILE cracked a grand slam as Montclair State swept College of Staten Island in a doubleheader at the MSU Softball Stadium on Sunday. The Red Hawks (19-11), winners of three straight won the opener 4-2 before posting a 9-0 victory in the second game.

Nicolette Trapani drove in two runs for Staten Island, which fell to 12-8 on the year. The Dolphins have lost three in a row.

Righthander SAM KEATING picked up the victory in the opener as she allowed five hits and two unearned runs in improving to 8-5 on the season. Keating struck out three and walked one. Jacqueline Cautela (6-4) took the loss despite throwing five scoreless innings.

Cautela' only unblemished inning came in the first as MSU put the first three runners on. VICTORIA GEHRING walked and NOEL HODGINS singled in the field. Gehring beat the throw to third on Powers' grounder loading the bases for Stamile. The left-handed hitter ran the count to 3-0 before unloading a shot over the right field fence for a grand slam and a 4-0 Red Hawk lead.

Staten Island would get two of those runs back in the second. Trapani singled through the middle with two outs scoring Ashley Notaro and Vanessa Joia as CSI cut the deficit to 4-2.

That turned out to be all of the scoring as Keating and Cautela allowed one three baserunners total to reach third the remainder of the game.

Joia finished 3-for-3 at the plate as CSI out hit Montclair State, 5-4 in the game.

In the second game, Powers, MSU's lone senior, tossed her third shutout of the season as she struck out two and walked two in the five-inning afair. Powers also drove in a run at the plate as she upped her record to 8-5 on the year. Trapani (6-2) took the loss.

Again the Red Hawks put up a four spot in the first inning loading the bases for Stamile, who came through with RBI single scoring Gehring. LAUREN BOOTH following with an RBI single with ALANA LUNA driving a ball through the left side for a 3-0 lead. Samantha DiClementi provided the final run with a sacrifice fly.

ALI WALEK added an RBI single in the third to extend the lead to 5-0 before MSU tacked on four runs in the fourth. Powers delivered the first on a ground out with Stamile driving in Gehring with a base hit. Luna doubled fown the left field line scoring Hodgins and Stamile with the final two Red Hawks runs.

Stamile finished 3-for-3 while Hodgins, Booth and Luna all had two hits to pace the 11-hit attack by MSU.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 19 with a road NJAC doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark beginning at 3:00 pm.
