Montclair, NJ - Ramapo College scored four runs in the top of the first inning of both contests helping the Roadrunners to a sweep of Montclair State at the MSU Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Ramapo (20-10, 10-4 NJAC) captured the first contest 9-1 before registering an 8-0 victory behind a no-hit performance from Christina Brizek.
Freshman
LAUREN BOOTH drove in a run for the Red Hawks, who fell to 20-14 on the season overall, 4-10 in the conference.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases in the first inning of the opener on a hit batter, error and single. Melanie Walling lofted a sacrifice fly for the first run and a double by Brizek made the score 2-0. Grace Brennan delivered the final two runs with a single into right center giving Ramapo a four-run cushion.
That proved to be more than enough for righthander Katrina Buczkowski, who allowed just three hits in upping her record to 9-5. The sophomore struck out seven and walked none as she kept Montclair State off the board until the sixth inning when Booth singled back through the middle scoring
ALI WALEK with the lone MSU run. Walek led off the inning with a base hit.
Nicole Mahoney collected an RBI double in the third and Harper Patsko homered with one out in the fourth for a 6-0 lead. Mahoney drove in her second run with a double in the fifth. Patsko and Mikayla Melendez each added RBIs in the sixth for the final Ramapo runs.
Patsko, Mahoney and Melendez each had three hits for the Roadrunners while Brizek and Brennan were both 2-for-4.
SAM KEATING (8-7) took the loss for the Red Hawks.
In the second game, Brizek faced just one batter over the minimum in recording her five-inning no-hitter. Brizek (11-3) struck out four with only a hit batter keeping her from a perfect game.
BROOKE POWERS (8-6) suffered the loss for MSU.
Like Buczkowski in the opener, Brizek was staked to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. An error allowed the first run to cross the plate and Melissa Moreno singled with the bases loaded to drive in the second run. Brennan was hit by a pitch with Mahoney adding a sacrifice fly for the four-run advantage.
Brizek retired MSU in order in the first and then hit Powers to open the second. That turned out to be the lone baserunner for Montclair as Brizek set down the next three hitters, ending the game with 12 in a row.
Walling drove in a run in the second with a single and added an RBI double in the fourth making the score 6-0. Patsko singled in the fifth with a second run coming home on an error for the last Roadrunner score.
Patsko finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Ramapo while Walling went 2-for-3 in an 11-hit attack.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 with a road NJAC doubleheader at The College of New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
