Baseball Edges York for Second Straight Win, 3-2

Freshman Maarleveld Six Shutout Innings

Montclair, NJ - Freshman MAX MAARLEVELD pitched six shutout innings while RYAN THIEME drove in a run as Montclair State posted its second straight victory on Wednesday, edging York College, 3-2 at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Reliever JAY GORMAN earned his first save of the season helping the Red Hawks up their record to 18-16 on the season in their final non-conference contest of the year. Montclair improved to 14-12 all-time against the Spartans (9-26-1), including victories each of the last three seasons. 

Maarleveld, making his first career start, allowed four hits ,struck out two and walked two but had to settle for a no-decision. Righthander Joel Kenney (3-5) took the loss as he went the first 6 1/3 innings for York. Kenney gave up three runs (two earned), seven hits, struck five and walked two.

Montclair was able to scratch out a run in the fourth inning. KYLE MISSRY doubled down thel eft field line with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. Kenney struck out the next hitter but walked STEVE SCHULMAN with ball four skipping away on a wild pitch allowing Missry to trot home with the game's first run.

That lead stood until the top of the seventh when York tied the game. Brayden Lackey walked with one out and stole second. Following a strikeout, Patrick Clement lined a single into centerfield scoring Lackey for a 1-1 tie.

The Red Hawks quickly answered with two runs in their half off the inning. JOE FOOTE reached on a fielder's choice and stole second with one out. JUSTIN EPIFANIO bounced a ball up the middle that was throw away at first base allowing Foote to score with the go ahead run. PHILIP SCOTT kept the inning going with with base hit before Thieme laid down a perfect squeeze bunt scoring Epifanio for a 3-2 advantage.

York trimmed the lead back to run in the eighth. Zach Hossler led off with a single and a one-out hit by Steve Miller put runners at the corners. Montclair got a pop up for the second out however Logan Countryman singled into right-center making the score, 3-2. 

Gorman came on in the ninth and walked Michael Moore to open the innings. The righthander then struck out the next hitter before getting a fly ball out and ground out to close out the game.

Scott, Missry and Schulman each had two hits for MSU. Moore was 2-for-3 for York.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 28 with the first game of a home-and-home set with Rutgers-Camden. The Red Hawks face the Scarlet Raptors at 3:30 pm with the two squads meeting again on Friday, April 29 at Yogi Berra Stadium.
