Baseball Falters in Twinbill at TCNJ; Earns Fifth Seed for NJAC Tourney

Red Hawks Lose 10-2 in Opener, 3-2 in Extras

Ewing, NJ – The College of New Jersey scored twice in the ninth and delivered the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning, completing a sweep of Montclair State in an NJAC doubleheader at Ackerman Park on Saturday.

The Lions (28-8) posted a 10-2 win in the opener before rallying back for a 3-2 win in the second game in the final league contests for both teams. TCNJ finished 12-6 while Montclair (20-18) closed out at 10-8 in league play.

When the dust finally settled on the last day, it will be the same two teams battling at the same ballpark in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament on Tuesday, May 3 at 3:30 pm. TCNJ will be the number two seed with Montclair State the No. 5 seed.

It will be the 19th time the two will tangle in the conference tournament with the Red Hawks winning the most recent matchup, 7-6 in 2011 at TCNJ. The Lions hold the advantage overall 10-9.

TCNJ grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first game before Montclair tied the game in the fourth. JOE FOOTE singled with one out and went to second as KEITH MURPHY singled with two outs putting runners at the corners. KYLE MISSRY followed with the third hit of the inning scoring Foote for the 1-1 tie.

TCNJ countered with nine consecutive runs, including four in the fourth. The Lions added another in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the eighth for a 10-1 advantage. KEVIN CAMPBELL had an RBI in the ninth for Montclair State.

Murphy finished 3-for-4 for the Red Hawks with Foote and JUSTIN EPIFANIO each going 2-for-4 at the plate. MICHAEL MATARAZZO (1-4) took the loss for MSU.

In the second game, PHILIP SCOTT doubled home Foote with Murphy added an RBI ground out in the fourth for a 2-0 Red Hawk lead.

That looked to be enough for MSU righthander AUSTIN MINTON, who blanked the Lions through the first eight innings before faltering in the ninth. Minton plunked John Rizzi to open the inning. Rizi stole second and went to third on a ground out. Pat Roberts' ground out brought home Rizzi making the score 2-1. Down to its final out, Garen Turner then cracked a homer to left field tying the game at 2-2. The Lions would threaten further getting the winning run to third after a pair of singles. However reliever TAYLOR PARSONS got a flyout sending the contest into extra innings.

TCNJ's Mike Follett began the 10th inning with a single and an error on a sacrifice attempt put runners at first and second. Another sacrifice moved the runners up and Montclair intentionally walked the next hitter to load the bases. Roberts then singled into left field for the game-winning run.

Matt Curry (2-1) got the win as he pitched a scoreless 10th inning. Joe Cirillo went the first nine innings allowing three hits and two runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Parsons (3-3) suffered the loss. Minton gave up five hits, struck out three and walked one in 8 2/3 innings.

PETER PENA had two of the three hits for MSU.
