DON FINN scored four times and picked up an assist as Montclair State opened its Skyline Conference schedule with a 15-9 win over Stockton University at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
BRETT MANGAN,
CONNOR CUNNINGHAM and
BRADY WULSTER each netted a pair of goals as the Red Hawks used a six-goal run in the second and four-goal burst in the third to capture their league opener. Montclair, the seven-time defending Skyline champion, upped its record to 5-6 overall.
Guy Loggi, Zack Aho, Tommy Gallo and Vincent Manasia all scored two goals apiece for Stockton, which dropped its second contest in the last three games. Stockton is now 8-3 overall this season, 1-1 in the Skyline.
A rematch of last year's title contest, Montclair bolted out of the gate scoring three times in the first 2:48 of the contest. Cunningham found
ZACH SCHRECK 46 seconds in and Finn scored the next two, as MSU led 3-0. Mark Scherzer put the Ospreys on the board and, after a Finn power-play goal near the halfway point of the period, Vincent Manasia tallied with 1:19 left as Montclair State led 4-2 after one period.
The second would belong to MSU which tallied all six scored in the 15-minute period. Schreck fed Wulster for the first goal with 11:44 to play and Cunningham scored unassisted 43 seconds later for a 6-2 lead. Mangan got his 18
th of the year with 5:41 to go with Finn's second man-up tally 39 seconds later extended the lead to 8-2. Cunningham got his second of the period with just over four minutes left and then found Mangan two minutes later as MSU led 10-2 at the break.
Guy Loggi opened the second for Stockton with a goal however Montclair State countered with the next four.
SEAN STADTLANDER began the run off a
BRYAN PETERS' assist at 7:17 of the period and
SHAUN STERNER followed a minute later. Mangan assists on
COREY CARLSON's goal for a 13-3 lead before Peters scored his first of the year with 2:49 left.
Trailing 14-4 heading into the fourth, Stockton made a push recording six of the seven goals in the period. Aho scored the second of his goal with Manasia adding another 56 seconds later as the Ospreys got within 14-6. Wulster answered for MSU with a power-play goal with 8:57 remaining. Gallo scored twice in a 50-second span and Loggi's second at the 9:38 mark got Stockton within six.
BLASE MANTINEO was once again outstanding at the X for the Red Hawks winning 15-of-21 along with 10 ground balls. It is the fifth time this season that Mantineo captured 15 or more faceoffs in a game and the third time he amassed 10 ground balls in the game.
Defenseman
RYAN YOUNG forced five turnovers and had nine ground balls. Finn added four ground balls with
STEVE DANYLUK totaling three for the Red Hawks.
LUCAS JONES stopped five shots.
Montclair State is now off until Saturday, April 16 when it travels to Riverdale, NY to face College of Mount St. Vincent in a Skyline matchup at 1:00 pm.
