Montclair, NJ – Senior forward
MIKE OLLA scored in the 21
st minute which turned out to be all Montclair State would need as the Red Hawks edged in-state rival Stevens, 1-0 at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.
Sophomore goalkeeper
MIKE SAALFRANK made five saves for his second shutout of the season helping the Red Hawks to their third consecutive victory (5-1). It was the first meeting between the two New Jersey schools since the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament and the first time the two have squared off in the regular season since 2002. MSU improved to 8-3 in the all-time series.
Stevens goalkeeper Aaron Henry made two saves early on keeping the contest scoreless until Olla broke through with his second goal of the season. Senior
DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ, who was injured early in the last meeting two years ago, got the assist, his second in as many games.
Henry denied Bziukiewicz a chance to extend the lead shortly after the goal before the Ducks began to put some offensive pressure on Montclair. However, Saalfrank was up to the task making three saves in a seven-minute span, including back-to-back stops against Nick DeFelice and Daniel Aversano in the 36
th and 38
th minutes respectively.
Saalfrank protected the lead into the second half with a save against Tommy Dorsay at 51:57. He would make one more with 6:55 left, denying Aversano for a second time.
The Red Hawks outshot the Ducks (1-2), 16-0 in the game.
Montclair returns to action on Tuesday, September 13 hosting Whitworth at MSU Soccer Park with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm.
