Montclair, NJ – Senior
LUCAS TERCI scored twice and tied the Montclair State career mark for assists as the Red Hawks knocked off Whitworth University, 3-1 in an East Coast-West Coast matchup at MSU Soccer Park on Tuesday evening.
Senior
AARON ROSE added a goal as Montclair (6-1) won its fourth straight.
DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ collected an assist lifting MSU to its second win over the Pirates (2-2) in as many meetings. The two met in 2010 at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta with the Red Hawks prevailing in that contest, 1-0.
Terci, who registered his third multi-goal game in the last four outings, gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 near the six-minute mark of the opening half. Receiving a free kick near the top right corner of the box, Terci drilled a shot that eluded Pirates keeper Timmy Costa.
Montclair upped the lead to 2-0 just over 10 minutes later as Bziukiewicz drove in along the right side before placing a perfect crossing pass in the middle to Terci, who flipped the ball over Costa.
Leading by two at the half, the Red Hawks extended the lead at 67:40 with Terci once again figuring into the action. The third all-time leading scorer in MSU history, Terci moved in along the top of the box before back-tapping a pass to a wide-open Rose, who blistered a shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season.
The assist on the goal was the 37
th for Terci, who tied John Rubinetti (1988-91) for the top spot.
Whitworth snapped the shutout with 12:57 remaining as Austin Cassidy found Jonah Snyder in front of the net for the Pirates' goal.
MIKE SAALFRANK stopped four shots for Montclair State, which was outshot in the game 13-11. Costa had on save with each team recording three corner kicks.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 17 when it hosts Ramapo College in its NJAC opener at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
