Field Hockey Uses Early Lead to Top Stevens, 3-1

No. 7 Red Hawks Remain Unbeaten at 6-0

Montclair, NJ – Sophomores ALEXIS AMBROSINO and AMBER HASLETT each scored within the first five minutes with KELLY WATSON adding another in the 16th minute as No. 7 Montclair used that early scoring barrage in a 3-1 win over Stevens on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore goalkeeper KAITLIN MAGUIRE made five saves as the Red Hawks posted their sixth consecutive win to open the season (6-0). Montclair also improved to 8-0 against the in-state rival Ducks (3-2), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Ambrosino put the Red Hawks on the board at the 3:49 mark with her fourth goal of the season. The sophomore collected a clear from the circle and drove right down the center untouched before firing a shot inside the right post for the 1-0 lead.

Haslett added to the lead 67 seconds later. KAITLYN STRUSS received the ball in front and flipped a pass over Haslett on the right post. Haslett deposited the feed in for her ninth tally of the year and a two-goal MSU advantage.

Montclair, which outshot Stevens 15-4 in the opening half, made it 3-0 with 16:38 gone by as Watson scored her second of the year. Off a free hit, defender CAMILLE MAIMONE lifted a shot from 30 yards out into the circle. Watson outraced the defender and flicked the ball over the keeper for the goal.

Stevens' Katti Thomasian would break the shutout early in the second half putting back a rebound for her third goal of the season 5:03 into the period. That would be as close as the Ducks would get.

Goalkeeper Emily Stukenborg stopped eight shots for the Stevens.

Montclair State held a 22-10 advantage in shots and had nine penalty corners compared to four by the Ducks.

Completing a three-game homestand on Wednesday, the Red Hawks now go out on the road for four beginning Saturday, September 17 in Saratoga Springs, NY against No. 16 Skidmore College. It is the first of a weekend set in Upstate NY as Montclair faces Rensselaer in Troy, NY on Sunday, September 18 at 2:00 pm.
