Women's Soccer Tops Vassar for Second Straight Win, 1-0

Beenders Scores GW-Goal; Burns Stops Six in Shutout

Montclair, NJ – Freshman EMILY BEENDERS scored with 10:29 remaining in the first half that turned out to be the only goal of the contest as Montclair State slipped past Vassar College 1-0 at MSU Soccer Park.

Senior goalkeeper ALYSON BURNS stopped six shots for the shutout as MSU won its second straight contest. Montclair improved to 6-1-1 overall while knocking off the Brewers (1-5-1) for the eighth time in 11 meetings.

Stephanie Tapolsky made four saves for Vassar.

Scoring chances were at a minimum as the two teams played between the boxes. MSU would get two chances in the 30th minute. Beenders fired a shot that Tapolsky made a diving stop on. ALEX GLICKMAN followed 20 seconds later with another that was scooped up by Tapolsky keeping the contest at 0-0.

Vassar had its best chance in the first half when Gabrielle Deitch ripped shot from the left side in the 38th minute. However Burns made an outstretched save to her left.

Two minutes later, Beenders would find the back of the net for her fifth goal of the year. ERIN SULLIVAN sent a ball into the box from the right side. Beenders was able to settle the pass before whipping a shot inside the right post for the goal.

The Brewers got two more chances in the half to tie the contest. Each time they were denied by Burns, including a stop against Rebecca Andrews with 5:25 to go.

Burns, who registered her fourth shutout of the year, made a save early on and then denied Savannah Cutler on back-to-back attempts in the 81st and 82nd minute.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, September 24 at Rutgers-Camden in a 1:00 pm matchup. MSU will then host College of Staten Island on Sunday, September 25 at 5:00 pm.
