Mayorga Goal Lifts Red Hawks Past Raptors, 1-0

Camden, NJ – Freshman CHRISTINE MAYORGA scored the lone goal late in the first half helping Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper ALYSON BURNS made seven saves for her fifth shutout as the Red Hawks won their third straight improving to 7-1-1 on the season, 2-0 in the NJAC. The Scarlet

Raptors fell to 3-3-2 on the year, 1-1 in the conference.

Montclair kept its record unblemished against Rutgers-Camden (18-0-1) however this match would be a battle. The Red Hawks held a 16-12 advantage in shots yet found themselves in a scoreless battle until Mayorga untied the match with her fourth goal of the year.

Sophomore ASHLEY KOESTER slid a pass from the top center of the box over to the right side where Mayorga finished the play with high shot toward the opposite side over Raptor goalkeeper Katie Gurba.

Burns made that one-goal lead hold up over the final 45 minutes with five saves, including consecutive stops against Catherine Fiore in the 52nd minute. Burns would thwart another Fiore attempt at 63:10 and then made a stop on a Fiore header with 4:37 left.

The Red Hawks go right back to work on Sunday, September 25 hosting College of Staten Island at 5:00 pm.
