Montclair, NJ – Montclair State and College of Staten Island enter Sunday's women's soccer matchup having allowed a combined two goals which set the stage for a good defensive battle at MSU Soccer Park.
It was anything but as the Red Hawks scored five times in the first half en route to its fourth consecutive victory in a 7-1 triumph. Freshman
EMILY BEENDERS scored twice and assisted on another goal helping Montclair (8-1-1) capture the first meeting between the schools.
The Red Hawks scored seven goals on 15 total shots beginning with the first at 12:34 as
BRYNN MCDONALD knocked in a failed clear attempt deep inside the penalty area. It was her first goal of the season. Freshman
CHRISTINE MAYORGA followed five minutes later, back-tapping a pass from
JENNIE HORNSTRA for her fifth of the season.
MSU's lead went to 3-0 in the 23
rd minute.
ERIN SULLIVAN sent a cross from the left side to the far post where junior
TYLER MADISON one-timed the feed for her fifth of the year. Beenders picked up the assist on the next goal as
ALEX GLICKMAN scored with 12:44 left in the first half making it 4-0.
Staten Island (6-2-1) got on the board with 4:11 to play as Krista Anson netted her fourth goal of the season. That was quickly answered by
RYELLE SANSONE, who drilled a shot from the top of the box over the keeper for her first goal of the season as Montclair led 5-1 at the break.
Beenders scored the two goals in the second half with Sansone getting the assist on each.
MOLLY BARROW made three saves for her fourth victory of the year.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 when it hosts Kean University at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff of the NJAC contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
