EMILY BEENDERS and
CHRISTINE MAYORGA each scored in the second helping Montclair State to its fifth consecutive victory as the Red Hawks downed Kean University, 3-1 at MSU Soccer Park.
JENNIE HORNSTRA had a goal for the Red Hawks, who improved to 9-1-1 on the season while staying perfect in NJAC play at 3-0. Shannon Brown had a goal for Kean, which fell back to the .500 mark at 5-5 overall, 1-2 NJAC).
Kean goalkeeper Lauren Healy made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless through the first 12 minutes before the Cougars nearly found the back of the net at the 13:57 mark. Brittany Birth got hold of a ball at the top of the box and lofted shot over MSU keeper
ALYSON BURNS. But MSU's
ALEX GLICKMAN was there on the back line heading the ball away.
Three minutes later Brown put Kean on the board with her first goal of the season at 16:19. Kayla Birth sent a cross from the right to the opposite side where a wide open Brown collected the feed before popping a shot over Burns into the left corner making the score 1-0.
Montclair tied the game in the 25
th minute. Mayorga blasted a shot from close in front that was blocked. The ball bounced off the defender right to Hornstra who completed the putback for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-1 contest.
The Cougars nearly regained the lead moments later however Jordyn Bronsky's open shot from the top of the box flew high over the bar.
In the second half, Montclair quickly grabbed the lead as Beenders scored her eighth 2:49 into the new period. Off a foul at the top left of the box, Beenders, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, fired a ground ball through traffic and into the far right post for the go-ahead score.
Kean nearly got the equalizer in the 50
th minute as Brown broke through and went 1-on-1 against Burns, who made a sliding block outside the 6 to keep the Red Hawks in front.
Montclair added to the lead four minutes later as Mayorga and
RYELLE SANSONE playing give-and-go along the right side with Mayorga finishing the play for the goal and a 3-1 MSU lead with 38:06 to play.
Burns made that lead hold up as she made five of her six second-half stops. She finished with seven saves while Healey had three.
Kean outshot MSU 15-10 with Montclair getting eighth of the 10 corner kicks.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 1 hosting Stockton University at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 1:00 pm.
