KAITLYN STRUSS scored with 5:02 remaining in the first overtime as 10
th-ranked Montclair State snapped its three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday.
KAITLIN MAGUIRE recorded her second shutout of the season as MSU upped its record to 7-3. Gwynedd Mercy fell to 4-4.
The Red Hawks outshot the Griffins 10-4 and had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners however the Red Hawks were unable to get a shot past keeper Samantha Soscia, who made eight saves in the contest.
Despite its advantage in shots, Montclair nearly found itself trailing as Gwynedd Mercy appeared to score late in the second half. But the goal was disallowed due to a raised ball and game headed into overtime.
In the extra session, the Red Hawks got the opportunity it finally needed.
MEGAN ROELOFFS sent a ball through to Struss on a breakway. Struss was able to beat the outstretched pad of Soscia for the game winner. It was the seventh goal of the year for Struss, who also snapped MSU's scoreless streak at 334:08. The Red Hawks last scored in first half of its 3-1 win over Stevens on September 14.
Montclair State is now off until Saturday, October 1 when it hosts Stockton University in its NJAC opener at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
