Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Ambrosino, Struss Two Goals Each as No. 10 Field Hockey Wins, 5-1

10th-Ranked Red Hawks Roll Past New Paltz

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore ALEXIS AMBROSINO and junior Katilyn Struss scored two goals apiece as No. 10 Montclair State rolled past New Paltz 5-1 at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore AMBER HASLETT had a goal and assist as the Red Hawks outshot the Hawks (2-1), 37-1 in the game to remain unbeaten at 4-0. MSU also improved to 17-1 all-time against New Paltz.

Ambrosino put MSU on the scoreboard 1:56 into the contest with her second goal of the season. Off a corner, one of 23 in the game by Montclair, freshman KELLY WATSON sent the ball across the goal from left to right for Ambrosino, who stuffed the pass in for the goal and a 1-0 MSU advantage.

That's the way the game would stay despite MSU outshooting New Paltz 21-0 in the opening half. New Paltz goalkeeper Megan Gangwere was outstanding making 13 saves, including several from point-blank range to keep the Hawks in the contest.

Gangwere made nine more stops to open the second and a defensive save by Hayley Kim at 51:47 prevented the game from getting away on New Paltz until the final 15 minutes when the Montclair State pulled away with four goals.

Struss banged in a pass from Galgano at 55:28 for the first goal with Ambrosino adding her second with 10:51 remaining. Haslett recorded her team-best seventh goal of the year two minutes later before New Paltz broke the shutout on their only shot of the game. Serena Capsello fed Justine O'Reilly for the goal with 6:25 remaining making the score 4-1.

Struss immediately answered with her second of the game and fourth of the year with 5:30 left.

Gangwere had 24 saves for the Hawks.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, September 10 hosting Misericordia University at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
