Haslett's OT Blast Sends No. 9 Field Hockey Past Unbeaten Kean, 3-2

Struss Scores Twice as Montclair Hands Cougars First Loss

Union, NJ - Junior midfielder AMBER HASLETT blasted a drive from the right wing 2:24 into overtime as No. 9 Montclair State handed 13th-ranked Kean its first loss with a 3-2 win at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Senior KAITLYN STRUSS scored twice as the Red Hawks (13-2, 3-2 NJAC) snapped a two-game losing streak. Struss moved within one-point of the Montclair State all-time record for career points. She had 136, one behind Jennifer Tanis' mark of 137 set in 2007.

Krista LaMaina and Teresa Carr each had goals for the Cougars, who fell to 15-1 on the year. Kean is now 3-1 in the NJAC, a half-game ahead of the Red Hawks.

Scoreless through the first 21 minutes of the contest, the Red Hawks broke through as Struss collected the first of her two goals. KAILEY DALGAUER drove deep into the circle before uncorking a shot that was stopped by Cougar goalkeeper Megan Houser. The ball came back out in front where Struss was able to fight off a defender for the ball before trickling in a shot for her 13th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

Montclair carried the one-goal lead into the second and added to it seven minutes into the new period. KELLIE VIZZUSO fired a shot that was knocked away by defender Katie-Lynne Lussier. Fortunately for the Red Hawks the ball came back to Struss who flipped the ball in off a defender giving MSU a 2-0 lead with 27:17 remaining.

Kean battled back cutting the deficit in half 10 minutes later on LaMaina's goal at the 52:05 mark. The Cougars tied the game with 5:01 to play. KAITLIN MAGUIRE stopped Rachel Mills on an attempt but the carom got on to the stick of Carr, who deposited it back in to the cage knotting the score at 2-2.

The Red Hawks would get the only scoring chance in the extra period getting a corner 1:54 in. Dalgauer took the insert and slipped the ball over to her right for Haslett, who drilled a shot inside the left post for the game-winner. It was Haslett's 11th of the year and made Montclair State a winner in overtime for the fifth time in 2017.

Maguire finished with five saves with Houser stopping six for Kean. MARISSA SICONOLFI had a defensive save for MSU.

Montclair State is now off until Tuesday, October 24 when it travels to Madison, NJ to face FDU-Florham at 7:00 pm.
