Madison, NJ – Perhaps it was only fitting that Montclair State's new all-time leader in career points scored netted the most important one of the evening. Senior Katilyn Struss scored 2:44 into overtime as the No. 10 Red Hawks slipped past FDU-Florham, 1-0 at Robert T. Shields Field on Tuesday evening.
Struss surpassed Jennifer Tanis as the all-time leading scorer in program history with her 15
th goal of the season as the Red Hawks (14-2) won their second straight and improved to 6-0 in overtime contests this year. Struss has scored the game-winner in four of those contests.
Montclair registered its 12
th straight win against its in-state rival however this won would need extra time as 70 minutes produced no scoring. In fact the Devils out shot MSU 12-9 however senior goalkeeper
KAITLIN MAGUIRE would turn away all seven attempts on cage by FDU-Florham.
Maguire, who earned her second shutout of the season, made one save early and then came up successful on back-to-back shots by Marissa Colvin 19 minutes into the contest. Maguire collected another with 8:42 left in the first half and then was matched by the Devils' Samantha Rubin, who made three saves against
KAILEY DALGAUER with six minutes left before halftime. Rubin came up with one more on a Red Hawks penalty corner with no time left sending the game into intermission scoreless.
Zeroes would remain on the board in the second half although FDU-Florham came dangerously close to putting a goal on the board. Paige Zawislak sent a shot that was knocked away by defender
MARISSA SICONOLFI 2:48 into the second period. Maguire recorded three more saves and Rubin one as the game headed into the extra period.
It wouldn't take long before the Red Hawks put the game into the win column with Struss scoring on the first shot of the OT. Taking a pass from
VICTORIA ROSSI, Struss got past a defender and fired a point-blank range shot past Rubin for the game-winner. Struss upper her career total in points for 138, breaking the mark held by Tanis (2004-07). She also registered her 17
th career game-winning goal, extending her all-time lead in that category.
Montclair State returns to action on Friday, October 27 hosting Ramapo College in its final NJAC game. The Red Hawks and Roadrunners square off at 6:00 pm in what will be a busy 18 hours for MSU which takes on No. 3 Babson College on Saturday, October 28 at 9:30 am at Sprague Field.
