Volleyball Drops Tough Five-Set Contest with Moravian

Herbert Post Season-Best 18 Kills

Montclair, NJ – Senior Mary Zacher recorded 19 kills along with 22 digs as Moravian College rallied in the final two sets for a 3-2 victory over Montclair State at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Brooke Kusmider added 16 kills as the Greyhounds squared their record at 12-12 in addition snapping a two-game losing streak.

Moravian won the first set 25-23 before Montclair captured the next two 29-27 and 25-22. The Greyhounds forced the fifth set with a 25-20 win and completed the comeback with a 15-12 victory in the final set. It was the first meeting between the teams.

Freshman SIYARA HERBERT had a season-high 18 kills and 13 digs for the Red Hawks (12-13), who also got 14 kills and seven blocks from sophomore CAITLIN LANGE.

Zacher and Kusmider combined for 12 kills in the fourth pushing the match to the decisive fifth set.

MSU's NATALIA MAJKUT opened the set with two straight kills however Zacher and Kusmider put down kills and an ace by Zacher gave the Greyhounds the lead at 3-2. Montclair tied the set on the next point but Moravian answered with a five of the next six points. Erin Tiger had three kills in the spurt to extend the lead to 8-4.

The Red Hawks got a point back but made miscues on the next three as the Greyhounds went up 11-6. Madi Anslow, who finished with six kills, recorded one for a 13-9 lead however Montclair State closed the gap to 13-12 on a kill by Lange. An attack error gave Moravian a chance to close out the match which it did as Emerson Gieryic dropped an attack just inside the line for the final point.

Tiger added 15 kills for Moravian, which got 57 assists and nine digs from setter Victoria Kauffman. Libero Jean Markovic added 16 digs while Alexis Szaro totaled 15.

Majkut was the third MSU player in double digits for kills registering 11 along with four blocks. JILLIAN WILSON had eight kills as did Griffith, who finished with 50 assists and 19 digs. Libero LILY SCANZILLO matched Zacher for top honors in digs with 21. APRIL DIANGELO finished with 12 digs.

Montclair State is back in action on Thursday, October 19 with a road match at New York University. First serve of the contest will be at 7:00 pm.
