Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State women's soccer team downed New Jersey City University 8-1 on Wednesday evening to earn an New Jersey Atlantic Conference Tournament home game on Saturday.
The Red Hawks, (9-4-4, 6-1-2) opened the scoring in the 3' when freshman
MELANIE CUNHA followed her own rebound and placed her shot in the left corner. The forward netted her second of the game 10 minutes later after junior
MICHAELA KNOBLOCK crossed on the right flank.
Knoblock was also involved in team's third goal after midfielder
CHRISTINE MAYORGA created the opportunity in the 25'. Defender
IMANI THOMPSON scored her second goal of the season with a thunderous strike three minutes before half-time.
Mallensy Vargas scored New Jersey City, (5-11, 2-7) first goal of the game from the penalty spot ten minutes into the second period. Team's leading goal scorer,
EMILY BEENDERS found the back of the net in the 69' after a Knoblock thru ball. Beenders then went on to set up teammate Cunha, who completed her hat-trick a minute later for her eighth of the season.
Mayorga's free-kick in the 77', followed by
KAITLYN SCRIVANICH's 84' goal assisted by
BRYNN MCDONALD and
IASIA GOELOE made the final score 8-1.
Wednesday's victory earned Montclair State an NJAC home game on Saturday against Rutgers-Newark at 1:00 PM.
