FRANCESCA VERRONE scored three times and assisted on two other goals while classmate
AVIANA PARAGGIO collected four goals as Montclair State rolled past Drew University 15-4 in its season opener at Sprague Field on Tuesday afternoon.
CHELSEA ORBAN and
ERIN CAMPBELL each scored twice for the Red Hawks (1-0, who captured their sixth consecutive season opener. Montclair also took a 9-8 lead in the series against Drew with its fifth straight win over the Rangers.
The Red Hawks scored seven of the eight goals in the first half, including a quick three to open the game. Verrone scored off an assist from Orban 2:58 into the game and Paraggio scored less than two minutes later before tallying again with 21:08 to play.
Drew's Kelly Dwyer snapped the MSU scoring streak 44 seconds later however Montclair State would rip off the four goals. Syndee Sapp began the run and Orban scored 48 seconds apart extending the lead to 6-1. Campbell got the last goal with 7:38 remaining as MSU led 7-1 at the break.
The teams traded the first four goals of the second half before a six-goal run by Montclair blew the game open. Paraggio began the spurt with Verrone scoring twice giving MSU a 13-3 lead with 12:44 to play.
CASEY PROVOST added a goal with
MEGAN THOMPSON netting the final score for the Red Hawks.
KYLE GRAVER registered three assists for Montclair, which scored 15 goals on 30 shots. Verrone rounded out her afternoon with three draws, five caused turnovers and two ground balls.
LEANNE MCCLOSKEY added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draws. Sapp forced a pair of turnovers and led MSU with four draws.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, March 1 with another home contest against and in-state rival. MSU hosts Stevens at 4:00 pm.
