LINDSAY LARE and
FRANCESCA VERRONE each scored twice during a seven-goal run in the second half as Montclair State bounced back from its first loss with an 11-7 win over Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon.
Lare tallied four goals with Verrone getting three as the Red Hawks (2-1) got their weekend trip to Maryland off on the right foot.
MEGAN MAHLSTADT added a goal and an assist for MSU.
Olivia Monteiro scored three times for Stevenson (1-3).
Lare scored the first of her four goals with 11:24 left in the first giving MSU a 3-2 lead however the Mustangs tied the game a minute later and grabbed a one-goal advantage just before halftime as Monteiro scored with eight seconds left.
Mallory Davila put the lead to 5-3 for the hosts 39 seconds into the second half however it was all Montclair State after that. Lared scored twice to tie the game at 5-5 and
Mahlstadt fed
NATALIE BADE for the go-ahead goal on a man-down situation with 24:48 remaining.
CHELSEA ORBAN got the fourth goal in the run and Verrone's tally with 17:32 to play put MSU up 8-5. Mahlstadt connected three minutes later with Verrone finishing off the spurt with 10:13 left giving the Red Hawks a 10-5 lead.
Monteiro broke the run of MSU goals scoring her third with 7:38 left but that was answered by Lare 22 seconds later making the score 11-6. Monteiro got the final goal inside three minutes but that would be as close as the Mustangs would come as Montclair's defense did not allow a shot the rest of the way.
Verrone had four draws and two ground balls for the Red Hawks with
LAYAL ISSA recording three ground balls along with a pair of caused turnovers.
AMANDA MAGUIRE made seven saves for MSU.
The Red Hawks close out their Maryland trip on Sunday, March 5 against McDaniel College in Westminster, MD at 1:00 pm.
