LINDSAY LARE scored with less than a second remaining as Montclair State scored twice in the final 16 ticks for a 10-9 victory over McDaniel College on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
AVIANA PARAGGIO scored three times for the Red Hawks, who won their second straight improving to 3-1 on the season. Emily Brownawell collected two goals for the Green Terror (1-2).
A back-and forth contest, each team had multiple-goal leads with Montclair posting the last scoring the final three for the victory. Olivia Geiger tallied twice and Lindsey Farrell added the other in a three-goal spurt midway through the second half that gave the hosts a 9-7 advantage with 15:07 to play.
Montclair got one back with 7:17 goal on Lare's second of the contest trimming the deficit to a goal. The teams turned to their defenses as each came within inches of scoring. McDaniel's chance came first but Brownawell hit the post with five minutes to play. MSU was awarded a free position attempt with 1:36 to play but keeper Elizabeth Collyer kept the Green Terror in front with a save on a free position attempt.
McDaniel got possession and a chance to clear however a turnover gave the ball back to Montclair with 1:24 to play. After possessing the ball, the Red Hawks were down to 15.7 second left when Mahlstadt fired shot from the left side just off the crease that found its way into the net tying the game at 9-9.
Montclair State's
FRANCESCA VERRONE won the ensuing draw and charged down the field before flipping a pass to
JESSICA ANDREULA, who shot with five seconds went wide. Off the restart, the Red Hawks were awarded a free position attempt with 0.9 seconds. Standing on the left wing, Lare took one step and fired a low liner into the net a tick before the horn sounded giving the Red Hawks the victory.
Lare also finished with a hat trick with
CHELSEA ORBAN,
NATALIE BADE, Verone and Mahlstadt each getting a goal and assist. Verrone won four draws and forced six turnovers in addition to scooping up three ground balls.
GRACE CONLON had three draws with
EMILY WONG and
LAYAL ISSA registered two caused turnovers apiece.
AMANDA MAGUIRE had two saves.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 9 with another road contest. The Red Hawks head to Upstate New York to face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4:00 pm in Troy, NY.
