Fayetteville, NC – The Montclair State baseball team finished out a tough opening weekend as the Red Hawks fell to Ferrum College and Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon. MSU (0-3) fell to Ferrum 9-4 early in the day and then wrapped up the weekend with an 11-3 loss to Frostburg.
The Red Hawks lost to Ferrum (2-4) for a second straight day as the Panthers grabbed a 5-0 lead through the first three innings. Montclair battled back with four runs in its half of the third.
JUSTIN BATES plated the first run with a ground out and
PHILIP SCOTT singled home two more runs making the score 5-3 with
RICH BURNER bringing home the final run.
But that would be as close as MSU would get as Ferrum scored a run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth for the final margin.
RYAN LONG and
JOE NORTON had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.
MICHAEL MANFRA (0-1) took the loss.
In the second game against Frostburg, Montclair jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
JOE FOOTE delivered the first run with an RBI double and later scored on a ground out by Norton. The lead went to 3-0 in the second as Sebastian Severio doubled home
BRODY LABBE.
However the Bobcats (4-2) scored 11 unanswered runs as it took advantage of six Montclair State errors in the game.
Scott and Severio had two hits each for MSU.
CONNOR LINDSAY (0-1) suffered the loss.
Montclair State is back in action next weekend with the start of their nine-game appearance in the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, FL. The Red Hawks open the trip against Muskingum University on Sunday, March 5 at 4:00 pm.
