Montclair, NJ – Freshman attack Kyra Bednarski scored six times as Stevens put up the first six goals in an 13-3 win over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman Emily Shanklin added three goals for the Ducks (2-0), who snapped a four-game losing streak against the Red Hawks (1-1). Stevens leads the leads the all-time series 13-8.
LINDSAY LARE had two goals for MSU which dropped its first game against its local in-state rival since a 10-8 setback in 2012.
Cami Santor got Stevens on the board 1:15 into the contest and the Ducks led 3-0 after 10 minutes as Bednarski and Hannah Condren each put up unassisted tallies. Kathleen Kalbian connected with 1623 left in the first half with goals by Condron and Shanklin capping the opening-run.
???????Lare snapped the string of goals by the Ducks with 4:35 left as MSU went into the half trailing 6-1.
Bedarnski widened the lead to 9-1 in the second half with three unassisted goals, the last coming with 20:59 to go.
???????Santor had a goal and assist for the Ducks, who outshot MSU 36-12 in the contest. Shanklin led the team with three draws while Bendarski added six ground balls and three caused turnovers to cap her afternoon. Stephanie Schnelzer stopped seven shots.
CHELSEA ORBAN registered the other goal for the Red Hawks, who got two draws apiece from
NICOLE WINTERS and
LEANNE MCCLOSKEY. McCloskey led the way with five ground balls with freshman
AMANDA MAGUIRE making 12 saves in her second collegiate start.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 4 when it heads to Maryland for a weekend set. The Red Hawks are at Stevenson on Saturday at 4pm before heading to McDaniel College on Sunday, March 5 for a 1:00 pm contest.
