Verrone's Big Afternoon Leads Women's Lax Over Buffalo State, 10-8

Red Hawks Pick Up Fourth Straight Victory

Montclair, NJ – Senior midfielder FRANCESCA VERRONE had an outstanding afternoon scoring three times and reaching double digits in ground balls and caused turnovers as
Montclair State slipped pass Buffalo State 10-8 at Sprague Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Verrone scored twice during the second half as MSU (5-1) outscored the Bengals 6-2 in the second half for its fourth straight victory. Jackie Dufresne had two goals for Buffalo State (2-2), which had its two-game streak snapped.

Verrone scored once during a game-opening three-goal run by Montclair State only to see Buffalo State answered with the next six, including one by Dufresne with 9:25 to go before halftime. CHELSEA ORBAN connected for the Red Hawks with 1:30 to play in the first and Verrone's second tally early in the next period got MSU within 6-5.

Cassie Saint-Vil pushed the lead back to two goals on an unassisted tally with 22:14 remaining. MSU responded with the next five goals starting with one from LINDSAY LARE and the second by Orban that tied the game with 15:18 to go. Lare fed MEGAN MAHLSTADT for the go-ahead goal inside the 12-minute mark and Verrone added to the lead with 9:31 remaining. AVIANA PARAGGIO capped the run with 6:15 left giving Montclair a 10-7 lead.

Morgan Hogue stopped the run with 4:48 left pulling the Bengals within 10-8 however Montclair controlled possession for most of the final minutes.

Verrone broke the MSU single-game record for caused turnovers recording 10, surpassing the mark of nine set by Kristen Gisondi against Wilkes University on March 24, 2003. Verrone also pulled in seven draw controls and totaled a career-best 10 ground balls, two shy of the Montclair State single-game record.

LAYAL ISSA forced a pair of turnovers with seven ground balls while goalkeeper AMANDA MAGUIRE stopped five shots.

Elyse Stark made 13 saves for Buffalo State. Saint-Vil added three draw controls, two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Alanna Herne had a goal and three assists.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, March 25 with a weekend set in Upstate New York. Montclair faces Fredonia at The College at Brockport at 2:00 pm. MSU meets Brockport on Sunday, March 26 at Noon.
