Softball Wins Two on Opening Day in Florida

Freshmen Pitchers Solid in Wins Over Defiance, Beloit

Kissimmee, FL – Freshman righthander NICOLE MAJEWSKI tossed a complete game in her collegiate debut while LIA STAMILE and ELENA RADESICH each drove in two runs as Montclair State opened its season with a pair of wins at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday.

Majewski scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked two as MSU (2-0) knocked off Defiance College, 5-2, before the Red Hawks came back with a 6-3 win against Beloit College.

LIA STAMILE gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the Defiance game stroking an RBI double that scored NOEL HODGINS. Defiance tied the game in the bottom of the inning however the Red Hawks went back on top in the second with two runs. ALEX ZULLA singled in the first run with an error allowing the second run to score for a 3-1 Montclair advantage.

Sophomore Samantha DiClementi singled home ALANA LUNA in the third extending the lead to 4-1. Jackie Hartman got a run back with a solo homer in the fourth but MSU answered that with a run in the fifth as Radesich scored on an error.

DiClementi had two of Montclair State's seven hits in the game.

MSU would find itself down two runs to Beloit in the first inning but came back with three runs in its half of the opening inning. LIA STAMILE brought in a run with a fielder's choice and Radesich singled through the left side tying the contest at 2-2. VICTORIA GEHRING singled home Stamile for the go-ahead run.

The Red Hawks added to the lead in the second as Stamile singled score Zulla for a 4-2 advantage. Beloit cut the lead back to a run in the third but Montclair added runs in the fourth and sixth for the final margin. Radesich walked with the bases loaded in the fourth and DiClementi singled in the sixth inning.

Freshman COURTNEY POLITZ got for the victory for the Red Hawks in relief recording the final 12 outs. Politz struck out four and allowed a hit over the final four innings to pick up her first collegiate win.

Gehring went 3-for-4 for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State returns to action on Monday, March 6 with two games. MSU faces Bluffton University at 9:00 am followed by an 11:15 game with Penn State Altoona.
