Collegeville, PA – Peter DeSimone scored with 1:30 remaining in the third overtime as No. 14 Ursinus College came all the way back from five-goals down in the third quarter for an 11-10 victory over Montclair State on Wednesday afternoon.
Lou Harrison and Reagan Katchum scored three and two goals respectively as the Bears remained unbeaten on the season.
Meanwhile, the Red Hawks are still looking for that elusive first-win of the season as they fell to 0-4 on the year. Sophomore
MATT HAEMMERLE had five goals for MSU.
Trailing 3-2 late in the first quarter, Montclair scored five goals spanning the end of the opening period, all of the second and into the third for a four-goal advantage.
BRADY WULSTER scored with 24 seconds left in the first to tie the game and Haemmerle put Montclair into the lead with 9:36 to go in the second quarter.
Scoreless over the next eight minutes,
SEAN STADTLANDER tallied with 1:57 remaining before halftime and Wulster's second with 14 seconds gave Montclair a 6-3 lead at the break. Haemmerle connected again 52 seconds into the third before DeSimone stopped the run with a goal making the score 7-3 with 10 minutes left.
Haemmerle added two goals in two minutes, the second with 4:45 left staking MSU to a 9-4 advantage. Ketchum began the Ursinus comeback on a man-up goal and Ian Desenberg's tally in the final minute of the third pulled the Bears within 9-6.
Ketchum continued the comeback in the fourth with his second and Harrison made it a 9-8 contest with 11:18 left in the game. Bobby McClure knotted things up at 9-9 four minutes later and Harrison's goal with 1:51 to play gave the Bears its first lead since the first quarter at 10-9.
MSU tied the game with less than a minute to go on an unassisted goal by
RYAN ANZALONE.
In the first OT, Montclair got the first chance however Elliott Shevitz came up with a save against
DON FINN 56 seconds in. After an Ursinus shot went wide, Montclair got off a cluster of shots, all of which went high or wide of the net.
The second extra period produced more zeroes although each team had a chance. MSU's
LUCAS JONES made a save with 2:54 left with Shevitz coming up with one of his own against
JAMES CLARKE with 49 ticks remaining.
Montclair State won the faceoff in the third overtime but Shevitz denied an
ALEX HAHN shot with 3:19 to go. Ursinus got took the ball the other way and had its own chance as Gerard Brown fired a shot that was stopped by Jones. However the Red Hawks couldn't come up with the clear and that proved costly as DeSimone took advantage of the turnover and scored the game winner.
SHAUN STERNER had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks while Finn registered a pair of assists. Jones finished with 14 saves while Blaise Mantineo was dominant again on faceoffs winning 21-of-26 with 13 ground balls.
The early-season difficult schedule for Montclair continues for Red Hawks on Saturday, March 11. The Red Hawks are scheduled to play No. 19 Denison on Saturday, March 11 in Baltimore, MD at 2:00 pm.
