Baseball Rally Against WPU Falls Short, 6-5

Red Hawks Fall for Second Time to Local Rival

Montclair, NJ - Freshman JOE NORTON was 4-for-4 with an RBI while PHILIP SCOTT was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, however Montclair State's rally in the ninth fell short in a 6-5 loss to William Paterson on Monday afternoon.

Pioneers leadoff man Mike Abate tallied three hits for William Paterson, while Eriq Colon and Carlos Perez also had multiple hits, including a home run down the left field line by Perez.

Wiliam Paterson opened the scoring in the top of the first when Jorge Solodkin brought home two runs with a single, and Perez followed with an RBI single of his own. Scott answered in the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle to bring home RYAN THIEME. The Red Hawks would chip away at the Pioneer lead, eventually tying the game at four in the fifth on a Norton RBI single, but were unable to ever take the lead.

JUSTIN EPIFANIO tallied an RBI in the ninth when the Red Hawks mounted a last-second attack, but WPU closer Frank Colasante was able to hold on for his fifth save of the season.

Red Hawks starter MATT LONG battled through 5.2 innings of work, allowing six runs (only two earned) on 10 hits and a walk while striking out five. He took the loss, while Bryan Kopko earned the victory in relief for the Pioneers.

The Red Hawks are now off until Thursday, April 13 when they head to Union, NJ to face Kean University at 3:30 pm in the first of a home-and-home set. The Cougars visit Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday, April 14 at 1:00 pm.
