Montclair, NJ – William Paterson snuffed out a potential seventh-inning rally in the first game and then created one of its own in the seventh inning of the nightcap as the Pioneers swept past Montclair State at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers (16-6, 8-0 NJAC) pulled off a game-ending double play for a 3-1 victory in the opener before plating six runs in the seventh of the second game for a 9-2 triumph.
LIA STAMILE had five hits and an RBI in the doubleheader for Montclair, which fell to 14-12 on the year, 3-5 in conference play.
Nicole Fryer gave WPU a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 1 as she lined a triple up the gap in left-center. She added another on a squeeze play in the fourth which was followed by a Rachel Wasilak single back through the middle making the score 3-0.
Righthander Gabirelle Castelli had the Red Hawks shutout through the first five innings before MSU put together a run in the sixth.
KAYLEE POWERS led off with an infield single, went to second on a sacrifice, to third on a ground out before scoring on a base hit to right by Stamile.
The Red Hawks threatened in the bottom of the seventh loading the bases.
BLAKE SAPERSTEIN led off with a single and back-to-back one-out walks pinch hitters Ali Walke and
ELENIS GARCIA packed the bags full. Powers lined a ball that Wasilak was able to pick just before hitting the ground then flipped to third for the double play to end the game.
???????Castelli (10-1) got the win allowing five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
SAM KEATING (4-4) suffered the loss for MSU. Stamile accounted for three of the five Red Hawks hits going 3-for-3.
In the second game, Salina Pellios and Fryer each doubled in a run giving WPU a 2-0 lead after two innings. Montclair State battled back scoring a run in the fourth on an error and tying the game in the fifth on an RBI ground out by
VALENTINA CUCCI.
Fryer regained the lead for the Pioneers in the sixth with an RBI single and William Paterson broke the game open in the seventh with six runs. Karley Jo Greulich capped the inning with two-run double.
Alli Podmajersky (5-5) got the win recording the first 19 outs before Alex Grubiak got the last two.
NICOLE MAJEWSKI (5-4) took the loss for the Red Hawks. Stamile and
NOEL HODGINS had two hits each for MSU.
Montclair returns to action on Saturday, April 15 traveling to Galloway, NJ to face Stockton University in an NJAC doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
