ALI WALEK drove in two runs in the first game and freshman
KAYLEE POWERS added three RBI in the nightcap as Montclair State swept its doubleheader with New Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Hawks (15-13, 6-6 NJAC) captured the first game 6-2 before taking the second contest, 9-3.
Scoreless through the first three innings of the opener, Montclair exploded for five runs.
SAM DICLEMENTI led with a double and was a third base with tw outs before a
NOEL HODGINS infield single plated DiClementi with the first run. Hodgins stole second and scored as
ELENA RADESICH singled into left center for a 2-0 lead.
After an error kept the inning alive, Montclair capitalized as
ALI WALEK drove a double to right center scoring
BLAKE SAPERSTEIN and Radesich for a 4-0 advantage.
VALENTINA CUCCI added an RBI single for the final run.
KAYLEE POWERS score on a wild pitch in the sixth inning extending the lead to 6-0 before the Gothic Knights broke through against Keating as heather Gavin launched a two-run homer.
SAM KEATING improved to 6-4 on the year allowing five hits and one earned run. She struck out two and walked two. Christine Mezey (5-13) took the loss for NJCU. Hodgins had two of MSU's seven hits in the game.
In the second contest, Montclair State trailed 1-0 after three innings after an error allowed the Gothic Knights (8-16, 0-12 NJAC) to score the first run.
But Montclair erased that and them some in the top of the fourth with seven runs sending 11 batters to the plate. Radesich tied the game scoring on a wild pitch and DiClementi put MSU in front with a two-run double. Powers tripled driving in two more for a 5-1 lead. Cucci added an RBI single with a passed ball accounting for the final run of the inning.
Powers widened the lead to 8-1 before NJCU scored two in the fifth. Gavin homered for the second time in the doubleheader helping the Knights pull within 8-3.
Radesich plated the final run in the seventh with a run-scoring single down the left field line.
Freshman
COURTNEY POLITZ got the win as she improved to 5-1. Politz went the first five innings before
KIARA RUIZ came on to register the final six outs.
Powers, Radesich and Walek had two hits apiece for Montclair.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, April 20 with a doubleheader at College of Staten Island beginning at 3:00 pm.
