Red Hawks Shut Down in First Game of Home-and-Home

Mahwah, NJ – Junior righthander Jerry D'Andrea pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings striking out eight batters as Ramapo College blanked Montclair State, 2-0 at Jeff Maund Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Roadrunners (19-14, 12-3 NJAC) scored both runs in the bottom of the first inning in taking the first game of the home-and-home set. The two teams square off again on Friday, April 28 at Yogi Berra Stadium beginning at 3:30 pm.

PHILIP SCOTT and JOE NORTON each had a hit for MSU (14-20), which fell to 6-9 in conference play. Montclair is currently tied with Stockton and William Paterson for the sixth and final spot for the upcoming NJAC Tournament which begins next week.

Ramapo scored the only runs of the game in bottom of the first rallying with two outs. Rob DeAngelis doubled to left center and scored as Brandon Martinez singled for the 1-0 lead. Martinez advanced to second on the throw and came home when Connor Walsh knocked a base hit to left field.

The rest was left up to D'Andrea (4-3), who retired the first 13 batters before allowing a two-out double to Scott in the top of the fifth. He then struck out the next two hitters to end the inning. Montclair mounted a threat in the eighth as Scott Walked and JOE NORTON singled putting runners at first and second with no outs. However D'Andrea induced a double play and then fanned the next hitting to keep the shutout intact.

In the ninth, D'Andrea go the first two outs, was hit the next batters. Greg Westhelle was called from the bullpen. Back-to-back errors loaded the bases but Westhelle was able to get out of it with a ground out to earn his third save of the season.

Righthander AUSTIN MINTON (1-5) was the hard-luck loser for MSU. Minton went the first seven innings scattering 10 hits, walking three and striking out three. TAYLOR PARSONS tossed a scoreless inning in the eighth with two strikeouts.
