Somerset, NJ – The Montclair State baseball earned a split with Rutgers-Newark on Saturday however the Red Hawks came up a game short in the bid for a spot in the NJAC Tournament.
The Red Hawks captured the first game 6-1 but dropped the nightcap 3-1 at Patriots Park, home of the Somerset Patriots. The left MSU (15-22) with an NJAC mark of 7-11, one game back of Kean University and William Paterson which grabbed the last two spots of the six-team field at 8-10.
Needing to sweep the Scarlet Raiders (23-13-1, 9-9 NJAC), Montclair got a solid start from senior righthander
MICHAEL MANFRA, who scattered four hits over 6 1/3 innings. Manfra (2-4) struck out three and walked three before giving way to
ANTHONY DEBLASIO, who recorded three outs. Closer
TAYLOR PARSONS registered the final five outs for his sixth save of the season and the 12
th of his career, a Montclair State record.
Manfra matched zeroes against Rutgers-Newark starter Mike Zibrin (5-3), who also pitched into the seventh.
The Red Hawks snapped a scoreless tie in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by
PHILIP SCOTT and
IAN LYNCH to open the inning put runners on first and second. Two batters later with runners and second and third,
JESSE BAIZA singled into right field scoring Scott for a 1-0 Montclair State lead.
MSU added two more in the seventh on an RBI triple by
RYAN THIEME and a sacrifice fly from Scott making the score 3-0. The Raiders got a run back in the eighth however Parsons came on and quelled any further damage as the Red Hawks led 3-1.
Montclair State then put the game away in the ninth scoring three times. Thieme and Scott walked to open the inning and both later scored on an error.
JOE FOOTE added a sacrifice fly for the final run.
Lynch and
KEVIN CAMPBELL had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.
The second game became a pitcher's duel between MSU's
CONNOR LINDSAY and the Raiders' Chas Bohannon as the two matched scoreless innings until the eighth when Rutgers-Newark struck for three runs.
Justin Marks broke the 0-0 deadlock with a single through the right side. Three batters later, Brian Boulineau brought home two more with a base hit for a 3-0 Rutgers-Newark lead.
Montclair State scored a run in the top of the ninth as Foote led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by
JUSTIN BATES. But Raider closer Luis Rojas came out of the pen and retired the next two hitters to preserve the victory.
Bohannon (2-1) got the win going 8 1/3 innings allowing six hits and a run. He struck out four and walked three while Rojas collected save No. 6. Lindsay was the hard-luck loser finishing the season at 5-3. The righthander went 7 1/3 innings allowing three hits and three unearned runs, fanning seven and working his way around five walks.
Thieme and Bates had two hits each for Montclair State.
