No. 12 Field Hockey Edges Bates, 2-1

Red Hawks Complete Successful Upstate New York Weekend

Clinton, NY – The Montclair State field hockey team, ranked 12th by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, made its successful weekend in Upstate New York with a 2-1 victory over Bates College on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Hawks, who won at Cortland the previous day, remained unbeaten as it upped its record to 4-0 on the young 2017 campaign. KAILEY DALGAUER and VICTORIA ROSSI each had goals for MSU.

Montclair State used a strong first half outshooting the Bobcats (0-2) 7-1 and recording both scores. Dalgauer snapped the scoreless tie in the 13th minute with her second goal in as many days. Taking one of its seven penalty corners in the opening period, MEGHAN MOLLAHAN found Dalgauer for the game's first goal.

The lead went to 2-0 after the first half expired. Getting a penalty corner in the closing seconds, the Red Hawks were able to keep the play going through the horn and long enough for VICTORIA ROSSI to record her first goal of the season. ALEXIS AMBROSINO picked up the assist as MSU led 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, Bates nearly flipped the script on MSU, holding the Red Hawks without a shot or a corner for the final 35 minutes. The Bobcats cut the deficit in half with 19:10 remaining as Taylor Lough scored for a 2-1 Montclair State lead.

Bates had two chances to knot the game however goalkeeper KAITLIN MAGUIRE turned away both attempts. Maguire denied Shelbie McCormack two minutes after the Bates goal. She then came up big with a stop against Bridget Tweedie with 3:35 remaining.

Montclair State closes out its five-game, season-opening road trip on Wednesday, September 13 when it squares off against in-state rival Stevens in Hoboken, NJ at 7:00 pm.
