Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team scored eight of the final nine points in the third set finishing off a sweep of Vassar College and completion of a 2-0 day at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.
Sophomore
JILLIAN WILSON put down the last of her 12 kills on the day as the Red Hawks improved to 6-3 on the year with the sweep of Vassar, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23, snapping a four-match losing streak to the Brewers (8-3). MSU is now 2-6 all-time against Vassar.
Earlier in the day, freshman
SARAH GONCZLIK registered nine kills and a .818 hitting efficiency leading Montclair State to a sweep of Lehman College.
TA'MYA ALLEN added eight kills for MSU, which won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-9.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the match, the Red Hawks found themselves down 21-16 after Vassar ripped off five consecutive points. The teams traded points making the score 22-17 before Montclair State rallied with seven points in a row.
LILY SCANZILLO served a pair of aces to get MSU within 22-21 and a kill from Wilson knotted the set. Another ace for Scanzillo gave the Red Hawks the lead and a combined block by Wilson and
NATALIA MAJKUT put the end of the match one point away at 24-22. Lauren Ninkovich held that off for one point with a kill however Wilson finished off a set from
ASHLEY GRIFFITH to give Montclair State its first win over Vassar since 2007.
Wilson led the way with 12 kills while
CAITLIN LANGE and
SIYARA HERBERT each had seven. Majkut collected five along with three blocks. Scanzillo served six of the Red Hawks' seven aces in the match. Griffith totaled 31 assists along with seven digs while Scanzillo and
ALEXANDRA CAMPOS had 15 and 13 digs respectively.
MSU hit .365 in its win over Lehman. Lange posted five kills with
ANDREA MARTORANA adding four. Freshman
MEGAN O'ROURKE served six aces and had 20 assists. Allen and Campos added four aces each for Montclair, which had 18 in the match.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, September 19 with a home NJAC against Kean University. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
