Volleyball Loses to Kean in Five Sets

Majkut Records 15 Kills for Red Hawks

Montclair, NJ –Junior NATALIA MAJKUT posted 15 kills however it would not be enough as Kean University rallied to take the final two sets in a 3-2 victory over Montclair State at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Senior Sara Ridgway collected 10 kills and recorded 11 blocks for the Cougars (8-4, 2-0 NJAC), who won the first set 26-24 before dropping the next two 25-15 and 25-18. Kean, which snapped a three-match losing streak against MSU, won the fourth 25-16 before taking the deciding set 15-7.

JILLIAN WILSON and SIYARA HERBERT added eight kills apiece for Montclair State, which fell to 6-4 on the year, 0-2 in the league.

Kean registered 19 blocks in the match, including seven in the fourth set. Vikki Stec and Andrea Antal recorded four and three kills respectively helping the Cougars for the deciding set.

Brett Harper opened the fifth with a kill and two errors by the Red Hawks made the score 3-0. Antal had two kills that pushed the lead to 7-2 and the Cougars went in front 10-3 on two kills by Ridgway sandwiched in between one from Brianna Calvano. Montclair got the next two points to halve the deficit however Kean reeled off the next four points for a commanding 14-5 lead. Stec started it off with a kill and served up an ace three points later to cap the run.

Montclair held off two point but Ridgway finished off the match with her final kill.

Antal had nine kills along with five blocks and five digs. Calvano totaled 36 assists, seven digs and five blocks.  Libero Kortnee Nelson collected 14 digs.

SARAH GONCZLIK added seven kills and two aces for the Red Hawks, who got 44 assists and seven digs from setter ASHLEY GRIFFITH. Senior LILY SCANZILLO led all players with 17 digs.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, September 21 as they go on the road to face Rutgers-Newark. First serve in the Golden Dome in scheduled for 7:00 pm.
