Struss Sets Goal Record, Gets Game-Winner in FIeld Hockey OT Victory

Senior Becomes All-Time Leading Goal Scorer at No. 6 MSU Remains Unbeaten

Montclair, NJ – Senior forward KAITLYN STRUSS became the all-time leading goal scorer in Montclair State history on Tuesday evening with her 53rd career goal. Her 54th turned out to be even more special.

Struss scored in overtime for the second time in three games as No. 6 MSU rallied from an early two-goal deficit for a 3-2 victory over Vassar College at Sprague Field. The win kept the Red Hawks unbeaten at 8-0. MSU also squared the all-time series at 4-4, avenging a 1-0 loss in Poughkeepsie last season.

Megan Caveny collected both goals for Vassar (5-2), which had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

The Brewers came out on fire with the game's first four shots and took a 1-0 lead 4:18 into the contest on Caveny's first goal, a shot from the top of the circle after Mikayla Young inserted the ball off the penalty corner.

Vassar kept the pressure up and extended the lead with 12:15 left in the opening period. Caveny registered her 10th goal of the season smacking in a shot from five yards out inside the left post.

Outshot 12-5 in the first half, the Red Hawks began to turn things around and cut the deficit in half as Struss banged in a feed from KAILEY DALGAUER in front of the cage 9:32 into the second half. The goal was the 53rd career score for Struss, who surpassed Jennifer Tanis (2004-07) for the MSU all-time lead.

Montclair would tie the game on a beautiful goal 10 minutes later. Megan Mollahan took a pass 40 yards out and dribbled five more yards before unleashing a hard feed that went through the defense and into the circle where AMBER HASLETT, who slipped in behind everyone, tipped it past keeper Liz Rotolo knotting the score at 2-2 with 13:14 left.

The Red Hawks nearly won the game in regulation as KELLY WATSON deflected a shot by Halsett into the cage with 1:14 to go. The goal however was waved off and the contest headed into overtime.

Playing the extra period for a second time in three games, Montclair would get its second victory 4:09 in. MSU kept a clearing attempt by the Brewers in which eventually found the stick of Dalgauer, who moved up the field before driving the ball into the circle. Struss cut toward the pass and managed to tap it in one step ahead of Rotolo for the game-winning tally.

KAITLIN MAGUIRE made 10 saves for the Red Hawks, who were outshot in the game 15-13 and out-cornered 10-4.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 23 when it hosts Gwynedd-Mercy College at 6:00 pm.
