No. 6 Field Hockey Wins Again in OT, 2-1

Struss Again with Clutch Goal in Victory Over Gwynedd-Mercy

Montclair, NJ – Another game, another overtime game-winner. For the third time in the last four games, senior KAITLYN STRUSS scored the winning goal as No. 6 Montclair State slipped past Gwynedd Mercy, 2-1 at Sprague Field on Saturday.

Struss registered both goals and broke the hearts of the Griffins (6-2) for a second straight year as the Red Hawks upped their record to 9-0 on the year. Last season, Struss scored the game-winning goal in overtime in a 1-0 win in Gwynedd Valley, PA.

Struss gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest with her eighth of the season. ALEXIS AMBROSINO picked up the assist as Montclair took that one-goal lead into the break.
In the second half, Montclair pressured goalkeeper Sarah Crane however she proved up to the taks with 11 of her 17 saves in the second 35 minutes. She also got help from Kathryn Lehman, who made a defensive save on a shot by Amrbosino less than a minute into the second half.

The Griffins came within inches of tying the game in the 53rd minute as Tori Sherwood fired a shot that appeared headed in, only to be knocked away by Montclair's MARISSA SICONOLFI on a defensive save. Siconolfi would come up with another inside 10 minutes and Crane made back-to-back- stops against Struss with six minutes left.

Crane made one save early in the first overtime with MSU's Katilin Maguire batting away consecutive shots by Melissa Russo and Carlisle Dixon in the 80th minute.

Crane recorded two saves in the first minutes of the second overtime. Maguire denied Shannon Carroll the winning goal with 6:39 to play before Struss ended the game.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 27 with the last of its five-game homestand. The Red Hawks face Muhlenberg College at 7:00 pm.
