Volleyball Sweeps Rutgers-Camden for First NJAC Win

Majkut, Wilson Help Red Hawks Past Scarlet Raptors

Montclair, NJ – Junior NATALIA MAJKUT registered nine kills and six blocks, including a block on match point as Montclair State collected its first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the year with a 3-0 sweep of Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore JILLIAN WILSON added five kills and six blocks for the Red Hawks, who snapped a two-match losing streak and improved to 7-5 on the season, 1-3 in conference play. MSU took the match 25-20, 25-16 and 28-26 to up its record to 13-5 all-time against the Scarlet Raptors (6-10, 2-2 NJAC).

Cortnee Wilkerson led all players with 12 kills for Rutgers-Camden.

Rutgers-Camden held an early 5-2 lead in the first set but Montclair State battled back with a 12-2 run to take a 14-7 lead after SCHYLER WHITE put down a set from ASHLEY GRIFFITH. The Raptors countered with an 11-3 spurt and grabbed the lead 18-17 on an ace from Natalie DiGiacomo. MSU got four of the next five points to go up 21-19. An attack error by Montclair made it a one-point margin however the Red Hawks ripped off the next four points to take the opening set.

MSU would take a 5-1 lead to open the second set and went in front 10-3 after TA'MYA ALLEN drilled a shot down the middle. The Raptors chipped away at the lead but Montclair State held off any run Rutgers-Camden made. Wilson and Majkut had consecutive kills to widen the MSU lead to 20-14. Victoria Lake got a point back for the Raptors with a kill however MSU recorded the next four points and went up 2-0 in the match after a kill finished off the second set, 25-16.

The third set proved to be entertaining with 12 ties and nine lead changes. Rutgers-Camden led 21-18 before the Red Hawks rallied with four in a row to go on top by one at 22-21. A block by Myiah Gatling and Jordan Erskine completed a two-point swing that gave the Raptors a 23-22 advantage. Montclair State countered with the next two and served for match point but Jamie Mulligan kept it going with a kill knotting the score at 24-24.

MSU got the first point on a kill from White however consecutive kills by Erskine gave Rutgers-Camden a chance to force a fourth set at 26-25. Majkut forced the 12th tie of the set with her final kill before combining with Wilson on blocks for the next two points, sealing the victory for the Red Hawks with the 28-26 triumph.

DiAngelo had five kills while Griffith totaled 31 assists and six digs. Allen added five kills with LILY SCANZILLO posting 12 digs from her libero position.

Mulligan had nine kills and eight digs for the Raptors while Wilkerson tallied nine digs. Alyson Lowe recorded 21 assists with DiGiacomo leading all players with 17 digs.

Montclair State returns to action on Friday, September 29 at the Gallaudet Tournament in Washington D.C. MSU will face RIT and DeSales at 4pm and 8pm, respectively.
